Ragtime: A Novel | E.L. Doctorow

Panpan

This is on the Modern Library list of 100 best novels, but I‘ll be damned if I can figure out why. I guess it‘s one of those books that I just didn‘t get?

#pop24 - book that‘s been turned into a musical

JamieArc I remember having a hard time with the book, but the musical is one of my favorites! 4d

RamsFan1963 I saw the movie back in the 80s, I fell asleep in the theater. The only good thing about it was Jimmy Cagney, in his last film role. 3d
Ruthiella I loved this book but I read it in the last century. I don‘t know how I‘d feel about it if I read-read it. 🤔 3d

Local café is shut for Bank Holiday so I'm recreating the experience in the back garden.

I've heard Strange Sally Diamond described as "like a dark Eleanor Oliphant". Fits #pop24 prompt for 42 year old character.

Continuing The Fire Next Time.

yourfavouritemixtape I love your bag!! Where is it from? 6d
RaeLovesToRead @yourfavouritemixtape It's from Vendula, but it's a weird one because it's a Japanese exclusive apparently. I got it off ebay. I have a huge collection of Vendula bags... they all have different shop fronts on them 😊 6d

My Italian Bulldozer: A Novel | Alexander McCall Smith

Pickpick

A light and quirky read! After a break up, an author heads to the hills of Tuscany to finish his book on the region‘s food and wine. When he gets to Italy, his rental car isn‘t there, and that kicks off the comedy of errors. He does indeed, drive a bulldozer across Tuscany, and meets a cast of charming characters.

This was just okay for me. It felt like the story just dragged on. More character driven than plot driven, and I just prefer plot!

julieclair I own this one and keep putting off reading it. Not sure why. It would make a good #ReadOrDonate choice for me as well. 1w

Really liked this one, although the gender unfairness absolutely pissed me off! Of course, that was the whole point, and I think the author did a good job of portraying that. So it was easy to see how the girls felt like they needed to take matters into their own hands, because no one else was helping, or even listening.

I'm a bit speechless. And emotional. And just... processing.

There is so much to unpick here and I am unequal to the task!

Tremendous mystery novel with dark academia vibes that is strongly rooted in reality and explores issues of race, class, privilege, exploitation, and power dynamics.

Manages to be both a pulse-raisingly compulsive whodunnit and a nuanced, highly-charged political discussion (think Yellowface / Such a Fun Age).

Wow.

Branwen YASSSSS! 😎👍🏻 I feel so proud that I was the one that recommended this to you! And that you liked it! 🥰 It's definitely in my top five reads of the year so far! 💕 2w
Suet624 I don‘t know why I thought this book was about something completely different. 2w

I‘m not a horror girl at all, but this was over-the-top fun. A nod to slasher films, this had tons of great pop culture references and humor, but still plenty of gore, because it is a horror book.

#unpopularopinion here, but I was mostly bored with this. I appreciate that Hughes puts the reader in the mind of a serial killer, how she made the LA fog feel like a character, and this definitely had strong noir vibes. And the writing itself is fine. It just seemed like the whole book was the MC was driving around, eating, drinking, and obsessing over his bombshell neighbor. The killings were in the periphery-just not a lot of action.

This started off with a bang, then was more of a slow burn. Told in alternating POVs, I had no idea what was going on and why (but in a good way!) and had fun trying to figure it out. But all the pieces came together nicely!

Back in March, I heard @ChrisBohjalian speak at my local indie bookstore, and got him to sign my book. He was great!
