"A long time ago, this happened, and it's happening now." That's how Paula's long-estranged mother, Kai, began the stories that wove through her unstable childhood. Now a loner and tough as nails divorce lawyer, Paula must rethink her self-image as Kali the destroyer and learn to open her heart.

CleverGirl I bailed on this book after about fifty pages. I just found it awkward to read, like the words didn't want to come together. Clunky, maybe? Should I give it another chance? 8y
Tav @CleverGirl I loved this book. Once I was about 50 pages in I couldn't stop - I had to know what would happen with her family and with the detective. 8y

My highest praise for a book is "it made me cry" and this one, though it's about how cancer ravages a young family, didn't. So I guess I wasn't as emotionally invested as I like to be. But I liked it. It's based on the author's own experience and is a searing indictment of our healthcare system.

A Dance with Dragons | George R. R. Martin

My inaugural Litsy blurb! Got halfway through the 5th book in A Song of Ice and Fire last year, then for some reason put it on a shelf. The show's return inspired me to pick it back up and once again I'm awed by the richness of the world Martin has created. It's ok George, take your time.
