The Adventurers Guild | Zack Loran Clark, Nick Eliopulos

Oh man. I'm loving this one so far. It feels like a fantasy world that I haven't read about yet, but has the same danger and suspense as the world of Middle Earth or the world setting for The Wheel of Time series. I looked up and was halfway done with the book.

What a fresh take on science fiction space wars. Humans have been turned feral and an alien race called the Krakau have saved a select few, clearing their memories and giving them a new life. The humans in this story are janitors but must quickly turn into battle ready soldiers in order to carry out a rebellion to find out the truth of why all humans were turned feral on Earth. Constant action and smart writing kept me on the edge of my seat.

This book reminded me a bit of the Chronicles of Narnia in its magical other world and its talking animal characters. The story is still very original. A little girl is transported into a world where all the human's pets go when they pass on. Not all pets play nicely, though, and the girl must save the world before the villain's evil plan is carried out! Great juvenile fiction read.

The book contains multiple short stories by some bigger names in the gaming/tech industry. The first few are pretty bland and then it picks up a bit. The great thing about the short story aspect is that if you start reading one and you're not into it you can just skip to the next one. There are definitely some weird stories in here. Gives you some insight into how these people think, and it's creepy.

The tag line for this book is "Ready Player One meets Stranger Things..." I disagree completely. This book had nothing in common with Ready Player One and the only similarity with Stranger Things was that it's set in the 1980s with a group of kids that play D&D. This is clearly a marketing ploy and shame on them, because the story was rather bland and didn't really pick up until the last 30 pages. It's worth a read if you enjoy time travel tho.

This book is pretty much an ad for Google so far. They can do no wrong and are on the cutting edge of, well, everything.

Continuing the story from "I Am Number 4" we see 4 (John Smith), Sam, and Six as they adventure forth looking for the other Loriens. They encounter lots of baddies where they seemingly almost die at every encounter and the baddies just seem to keep catching up with them. There's also a side plot involving the 7th Lorien. The book was good but I feel like it would probably make a better movie, just like the first one.

The Lost Gate | Orson Scott Card

The story and connections to Norse mythology are great, but I didn't find some of the in between story to be entertaining. I listened to it on audio so that made it a bit more bearable. I'm finding as I age I'm not as enticed by Card's work. Much of it contains too much political intrigue.

Supposedly a classic. Well written, but somewhat of a weird read. Lots of man vs self. I found the main character's thoughts to be pretty weird at times.

Can't really review this book as I didn't finish it, but after 120 pages in I decided it just wasn't worth my time. Extremely dull. It had the politics of Game of Thrones without anything remotely interesting. Total snooze fest. It claimed to involve people who knew how to use magic, but magic was only used within the first 5 pages. 120 pages of some weird witch lady whispering "Jahan" inside the main character's head just got really annoying.

Wow. Who knew a random book I'd pick off of the shelf in the library would turn out to be a gem of the highest caliber. This juvenile fiction was a page turner ensconced with mystery, intrigue and adventure. Jessica Sternhagen finds a book, Her Lif, about her life, but the story changes as events unfold. An evil villain wants to take over the world, and get rid of all the books in the process. Can Jessica save the world from destruction?

Couldn't identify with any of the characters. Story seemed to pull from already oversaturated genres, and the random explicit sex scene just made it worse.

Having not read the original Septimus Heap series this book was, eh, okay. There's a lot of things that aren't explained, and a bunch of words misspelled on purpose and some not on purpose (the character's name is Dan, not Don, Mr. Editor). There's no real resolution to the story. At least with Harry Potter things were wrapped up nicely even if the larger evil still lurked out there somewhere.

Don't read this book if you like interesting plot lines, engaging stories, or adventures that make sense. Do read this book if you enjoy poetry, don't care much about characters, or find it fascinating to read paragraphs and paragraphs of trivial literary devices that add nothing of substance to the story.

If you are going to read this book I recommend starting around page 250. You will not have missed out on anything, trust me.
