Anyone else pick The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell as their Book of the Month club?

I really liked this book, the main characters struggle is one I've always been super curious about and I think the author did a great job showing us her inner turmoil.

Watching Fifty shades freed on my day off and I can't help but think that Jamie Dornan, is more believable as the serial killer he played on The Fall then he is as Christian Grey.

I like the premise behind this book but only a few chapters in and I'm already mentally yelling at Judas (the main character). Dude, you fucking bought a ghost because you thought it would be cool and you can't figure out why your radio was on when it should be off, or why your alarm hasn't gone off because you can hear creaking in the hallway... oh shit buddy may be it's that ghost you bought! *eyeroll*

Kill Creek | Scott Thomas

Horror no longer goes bump in the night. Horror stuffs the bodies of dead hookers in his crawl space and then pulls a twelve-hour nursing shift taking care of your sick mother. Horror sits in his cubicle and fantasizes about sucking the toes of the high school cheerleader he plans to strangle after work. Horror stays awake at night dreaming up ways to hurt you and your family and everything you hold dear.

Having a hard time getting into my normal go to type books of true crime, psychological thrillers/thrillers. So I thought I would indulge in some horror reading. It is that time of the year after all.

I really liked this book a lot. I hate giving in depth reviews because I don't want to ruin it for anyone so what I will say is this. I can totally relate to the narrator, and the desperation she feels. Which is probably why I liked it so much.

Not even a television script could make it believable that a crime writer could sign a contract to write a book about a killer, and then have the suspect turn out to be her close friend. It wouldn‘t wash.

quote

He smiled at me. He looked like he wanted me to help him and I was almost going to … until I noticed his eyes … they were very weird and they gave me the creeps. I began walking very rapidly away.

Every experienced homicide detective knows that if a case is not resolved within twenty-four hours, the chances of finding the killer diminish proportionately with the amount of time that passes. The trail grows colder and colder.

As I read about the politician that let Ted Bundy babysit his kids I wonder how neurotic those parents became afterwards. How would you react if you found out a serial killer was your babysitter? It would freak me right the f@%! out. I think I would question every decision I ever made as a parent from then on.

veritysalter I‘m reading this now. It‘s been on my TBR for so long. It is fascinating and appalling in equal measure. His charm and charisma must have been amazing; to fool so many people for so long and to be able to hide the monster within him from his public self. 7mo

I'm trying to read too many books right now, but I can't seem to really get into any of them.

Lady_Tigana_20 I tend to read multiple books—it gives me a break when pace gets slow or I am just done reading that one for the night. Sometimes, I just have to focus on one to get it done. And sometimes I just tag title as DNF in Goodreads. Maybe choose one to focus on. (edited) 7mo
rretzler A little late but welcome to Litsy! I too tend to read multiple books and if I can‘t get into one then I‘ll start another. I rarely totally give up on a book though because a couple of my favorite books I didn‘t appreciate until later in the book. It may take me a long time, even years, but I almost always finish unless it‘s something I really hate. I just figure if it‘s a book that others like, I may not be in the mood for it now and I move on 7mo

So my haul from Half Price Books wasn't as good as I hoped it would be. They had a lot of books, but I felt more than a few of the ones I wanted were over priced for the condition of the book. I'm not against paying full price, or half price as the name of the place states but not for books with pages falling out. I did get these two booka though which I am happy about.

76 days lost at sea, you'd think that this book would be boring or that there wouldn't be much to say about 76 days of wide open sea and let's face it probable death. However this is an amazing book, and it kept me hooked from beginning to end.

This book is amazing, I love a book with badass female characters that can hold their own. So many books portray women as helpless and in need of rescuing. I love a long book that I can devour, and Karen Rose certainly delivered that. 600+ pages passed in the blink of an eye, I'm excited for the next book!

I think back on my teenage years and wonder if the books are way off or if I was just totally blind to this stuff happening around me. I wasn't popular but I wasn't unpopular either. I was somewhere in between, it wasn't an awful place to be. Is this extreme popularity the make you or break kind a real thing... anyone have experience with this?

readingismyselfcare I was the same. I had a lot of friends from different groups, but didn't really belong to any one group. I liked it. I always had someone to hang out with, and never felt left out. 7mo

How is it possible for a main character to be used up and abused and still be unlikable? Normally I can get behind an underdog character, I get excited to see her finally kickass but eh... she never does. The over story isn't awful though.
