What better book could I read on the birthday of a nation of immigrants?

This is more a matter of personal taste than a criticism of the writing or plot. I have a hard time identifying with these character's whose entire lives are about religion. I find that frequently they make decisions based on wants that they try to portray as being motivated by faith.

Ecclesiastical lit isn't my thing but I got this from my grandma so I'm giving it a shot
