It was such fun to read June 5 at Friendly City Books and have a conversation with Lauren Rhoades, whose memoir Split the Baby was also just released. If you get a chance, check out her insightful story of growing up in an interfaith family split by divorce and very different views on beauty, identity, and what it means to be a woman in America. I've read Lauren's MFA thesis, and can't wait to see how it has evolved to become this lovely book.

pickThis very personal account of the author and her husband Walter Inglis Anderson is fascinating on many levels. It explores his art and his struggles with mental illness and recovery, and tells the story of how she and the family lived with this.
I heard Becky read from this fantastic collection. Love her work and am looking forward to reading more.
This is my first book of poems. It deals with themes of love, travel, loss, displacement, and of course the landscapes and places I have lived. Some poems were written in college, some performed at Chicago's poetry slams. They range from introspective to very public performance poems.
pickMichael Kardos pens a thriller with enough character to keep literary readers interested and enough suspense to keep it thrilling. There is plenty of humor, too. No spoilers in this review, but hats off to you if you guess the end before the final chapter!
I translated these poems into English. They were written in the early 1960s in Flemish (the Dutch spoken in Belgium). Originally these were 3 books, each focusing on one of the three men of the title. The poems are very surreal. Definitely not historical!
This is my dissertation in comparative literature from the University of Texas at Austin (1994). One part has been published as Hercules, Richelieu, and Nostradamus. The title says it all!
My second book of poems deals with memory, growing up in Iowa, and putting down roots in Mississippi.
I won't rate this, since I wrote it! These poems explore the world, life, and art of Walter Inglis Anderson, who lived in Ocean Springs, MS, and camped on Horn Island to draw and paint.
