Pickpick

Flawed characters living flawed lives. The story follows one family, but they represent the make-up of society. I'm not the biggest fan of magical realism because it's mostly just weird; however, it didn't completely overwhelm the story so it wasn't unbearable. It's easy to see how Allende's unique personal experiences are integrated within the story. Overall? Not the best book I've ever read, but it's still good.

I've fallen in love with Latin American history over the past year. Not because the history is pleasant, goodness no. The political turmoil lasted decades, and it's legacy continues to impact the region today. Not every book from a Latin American author has to be politicized, but Isabel Allende is the niece of ousted Chilean President Salvador Allende. Politics is literally in her blood.
