Swimmy | Leo Lionni
post image
Pickpick

Swimmy by Leo Lionni is an adorable and encouraging book for elementary ages students to read. Swimmy is a brave little fish that will teach students the true power of teamwork. Swimmy and his friends work together to chase the big fish in the sea away and they are no longer scared now that they know they have each other. The illustrations in this book are beautiful and I absolutely love the lesson in this short story. #UCFLAE3414L17

Sabrinac http://littleowlsteachertreats.blogspot.com/2017/09/new-year-new-school-new-free.... This link will take you to where I found my lesson plan. I love this lesson plan because, I can introduce this book in the beginning of the year and have my students write down classroom rules and how they should respect each other. 6y
Sabrinac Swimmy by Leo Lionni is a Caldecott Award Winner! 6y

Sabrinac The ESOL strategy I will use will be number 19, Establish predictable classroom routines through the use of an outline on the board or bulleting board. I will use this because, I can display the fish decorations with the classroom rules each student comes up with. I will display them all over the classroom to remind the children of the rules they established! 6y
Sabrinac The UDL strategy I will use will be number 6.2, Support planning and strategy development. I will use this strategy because, I will help my students plan how they will construct their fishes and I will then help them decided which rules they want to put on their fishes and why. 6y
Jaquessial This is so cute for students to know that being different is okay. 6y
Sabrinac @Jaquessial I completely agree! 6y
Sabrinac We can read this book aloud together (RA). 6y
SavannahP0930 So cute! I think this would be a great book to share when dealing with bullies or friendship. 6y

Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak tells the story about a little boy Max who has the biggest imagination. When his mother send him to bed without dinner, he falls asleep and his room turns into a forest surrounded by an ocean. You have to read this classic book to see the adventure Max goes on! I also love that there is a motion picture to go along with this book! #UCFLAE3414L17

Sabrinac Where The Wild Things Are is also the winner of the 1964 Caldecott Medal! 6y
Sabrinac https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.brighthubeducation.com/lesson-plans-grades-1-2/.... This link will take you to the lesson plan I would use with this book. The students would create their own monsters and write a short story to go with their monster. They will be able to work in groups. 6y
Sabrinac The ESOL strategy I will use with my students will be number 10, Teach think, pair and share strategies in cooperative groups. I will use this strategy because, my students will be able to group up during this lesson and share their monsters and stories. 6y
See All 8 Comments
Sabrinac The UDL strategy I will use will be number 8.4, Increase mastery-oriented feedback. I will use this strategy because, I want to give each students my feedback on their monsters and stories. I also want the students to practice giving each other positive feedback. 6y
Jaquessial Where the wild things are is my favorite book. I guess I loved the idea of using your imagination going into a different realm or an adventure. 6y
Sabrinac @Jaquessial I love it too!! 6y
Sabrinac The students will read this book in small groups and they will then complete their lesson in their small group (LC). 6y

Wonder | R. J. Palacio

Wonder by R.J. Palacio is such an amazing read, that teaches us to always choose kindness. This realistic fiction book is about August Pullman, a boy who was born with facial deformity that prevented him from going to a mainstream school until he attend Beecher Prep in 5th grade. Not only does Auggie face the challenge of being the new kid, but he struggles to convince his peers that he is just like them, despite his appearance.

Sabrinac I strongly believe that this book should be in every teachers classroom library! #UCFLAE3414L17 6y
Sabrinac http://www.storyboardthat.com/teacher-guide/wonder-by-r-j-palacio. Using this link to find the lesson, I will have my students complete character maps for each character in this book. For example, during each characters chapter, the students will be able to develop their maps. 6y
Sabrinac The ESOL strategy I will use will be, number 7, Show students how to use graphic organizers like semantic mapping and imaging. They will use this strategy while they are creating their character maps. 6y
See All 6 Comments
Sabrinac The UDL strategy I will use will be, number 6.3, Facilitate managing information and resources. I selected this strategy because, by instructing my students to make character maps on each character in this book, I am ensuring they are managing all the information they are learning in this book. They are keeping track of each character and the information they learn on each individual. 6y
Sabrinac The students can read this book in their LC groups! 6y
SavannahP0930 I just saw the movie and it was just as much a tear jerker as the book. This is such a wonderful book and teaches valuable lessons. 6y

Matt De La Peña was the first Hispanic author to win the Newbery award for this wonderful book, Last Stop On Market Street. This book tells the story of a little boy who begins to ponder why he lives the life he does. He begins to ask his grandmother questions about their lifestyle on their daily bus ride across town. He wonders things such as, why they don't have a car? and why he doesn't have an iPod like the other children on the bus do?

Sabrinac The little boy, CJ gets all his questions answered by his grandmother. His grandmother always has a positive answer to his questions. She teaches CJ to see the beauty in the life they live! #UCFLAE3414L17 7y
Sabrinac https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Last-Stop-on-Market-Street-Lesson-Pl.... This link will take you to a lesson plan I would use in my classroom! This lesson plan has students read aloud this story and then discuss words both CJ and his grandmother use that describe them! I love this activity, and I think it's a great way to incorporate reading the story aloud as a class as well! 7y
Sabrinac The ESOL strategy I would use is number 16, Integrate speaking, listening, reading and writing activities. I would use this strategy because, it goes along with my lesson plan. I would be reading the story out loud, and we would then be writing down characteristics and vocabulary words we heard from CJ and his grandmother. 7y
Sabrinac The UDL strategy I would use would be number 2.1, Clarify vocabulary and symbols. I would use this strategy because, it also goes along with my lesson plan of learning new vocabulary and using that vocabulary to better understand the characters. 7y
DrSpalding It is rare that a picture book wins the Newbery award however this one is worthy. Integrating the language arts and reinforcing vocabulary are key points to students' comprehension. 7y

Colors of Me | Brynne Barnes
post image
Pickpick

This is a picture book of poetry with beautiful illustrations and a great message! I would use this in a RA to teach students a lesson about diversity! It is about a kid who is wondering if things in life know what color they are. He says if they could be any color that they would be all the colors! At the end he realizes that everyone and everything is a different color, but that is ok! #lae3414f17

MakennaK I would use EL strategy 2, promote cooperation. During this, students will be able to talk to one another about diversity and discover new ideas and thoughts from other students! I would use UDL 2.4, promote understanding across languages, because it allows for more diversity and for all types of students to learn! 7y
AJones What a beautiful book! My kindergarteners would absolutely love Brynne Barnes' playful rhymes, and I like how she asks questions throughout the book. This strategy gets students thinking. I also love Annika M. Nelson's vivid illustrations. ❤️📚I agree this book would enhance any lesson on diversity. Children need to understand it's alright to be different more now than ever. I have added this book to my reading list. Thanks for sharing! -Ashlie 7y

EricaG The illustrations in this book look beautiful! From your description it sounds like a great book to help teach kids about diversity, while also teaching a lesson on poetry! 7y
Sabrinac I love that you said you would use this book to teach a lesson about diversity! It is so important children understand that it is okay to be different from your peers! I also love the picture you choose, it shows the beautiful colors this book has for each chapter! #ucflae3414L17 7y
DrSpalding What a beautiful book! Your activities are spot on and any book that has a diversity theme as this does, is an excellent addition to your classroom library. 7y
PatriciaS I love the diversity covered it's important to address with students that we are all different but human beings too 3y

This is a hilarious F PB, winner of the, "Goodreads best choice picture book", that I would use in a RA with younger children. It is all about a pigeon who is refusing to take a bath even though he is very dirty and smells very bad! https://youtu.be/mhiD4jfOj9o this is a video of a read aloud that I would show my class! I would use EL 14 by reading the book very slow and clear with fun voices. This will help beginner ELs.

MakennaK I would use UDL 1.3, offer alternatives for visual information, by doing a read aloud, showing a video, and using a larger version of the book. #lae3414f17 7y
AJones This book is hilarious! 🤣 The moral is you never know what you might like until you try it. Sometimes we need to step outside our comfort zone and try new things. Your embedded YouTube video would be great in a listening center. Thanks for sharing this great pick! 📚-Ashlie 7y

Taylorhenderson3 I think this would be an adorable book to read to the young boys who never want to go in and take a shower, or when someone doesn‘t like their veggies! This is definitely a funny moral to get across ! I love this series 7y
AlexaDP I remember first hearing about this good from a teacher I was observing who had students who did not like washing their hands. I thought it was hilarious and I knew that it would be one of the firsts to go in my classroom library! 7y
Sabrinac This book looks like it is hilarious! I am going to have to read it for sure! I love the video of the lesson you would use and I think this would be a great addition to any classroom library! #ucflae3414L17 7y
CourtneyR Such a cute book, I have several other books in the series. Great books! 7y
kkidwell I am in love with these books! I even own the pigeon plush. Each of these books has a lesson that younger students can learn from. Especially this one, as others have pointed out, children have a difficult time understanding the importance of handwashing and bathing in general. 7y
DrSpalding Wonderful peer comments. I believe we now have many pigeon fans in our classroom.🙂 7y
