Recipient's book tastes

I love stories that are well-told, regardless of the genre. Some of my favorites this year are: Tom Lake, Rebecca, Lessons in Chemistry, Attack of the Black Rectangles, I Am I Am I Am, and The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi.

Do not get

Neil Gaiman (I've already read most of his catalog), graphic novels or manga (I get them from the library), any book where a child dies (if possible), City of Brass (already on my bookshelf), horror (I'm a wimp!).
