Full Length, DramaCharacters: 8 male, 1 female Unit set. A searing drama about public and private indifference to the AIDS plague and one man's lonely fight to awaken the world to the crisis. Produced to acclaim in New York, London and Los Angeles, The Normal Heart follows Ned Weeks, a gay activist enraged at the indifference of public officials and the gay community. While trying to save the world from itself, he confronts the personal toll of AIDS when his lover dies of the disease. "An angry, unremitting and gripping piece of political theatre."-New York Daily News "Like the best social playwrights, Kramer produces a cross fire of life and death energies that illuminate the many issues and create a fierce and moving human drama."-Newsweek

Bookclub rec. Reading this a year into the COVID-19 pandemic made this play not just a piece of history but something immediately relevant. It made me somehow less angry and more understanding of the spectrum of responses people have when confronted with a deadly virus. Human beings are just wired certain ways. Sadly it seems a lot of people have to die before we collectively can muster a plan of action to make forward progress. #sad #larrykramer

Today's bookish mail. Part wanting to read the play and compare it to the movie, part research for a writing project.

Notafraidofwords I loved the movie, but the book added something extra to the movie. Both are great! 👌📚 8y
Kat.Kao What's your project? I saw the play about 10 years ago--so intense. 8y
bookishkai @Kat.Kao it's a fanfic set at a theater camp and my two main characters are cast in the show. 8y
Kat.Kao Oh interesting! 8y
