The Haunting of Room 904
The Haunting of Room 904: A Novel | Erika T. Wurth
7 posts | 6 read | 4 to read
From the author of White Horse (Twisty and electric. The New York Times Book Review) comes a terrifying and resonant novel about a woman who uses her unique gift to learn the truth about her sisters death. Olivia Becente was never supposed to have the gift. The ability to commune with the dead was the specialty of her sister, Naiche. But when Naiche dies unexpectedly and under strange circumstances, somehow Olivia suddenly cant stop seeing and hearing from spirits. A few years later, shes the most in-demand paranormal investigator in Denver. Shes good at her job, but the loss of Naiche haunts her. Thats when she hears from the Brown Palace, a landmark Denver hotel. The owner cant explain it, but every few years, a girl is found dead in room 904, no matter what room she checked into the night before. As Olivia tries to understand these disturbing deaths, the past and the present collide as Olivias investigation forces her to confront a mysterious and possibly dangerous cult, a vindictive journalist, betrayal by her friends, and shocking revelations about her sisters secret life. The Haunting of Room 904 is a paranormal thriller that is as edgy as it is heartfelt and simmers with intensity and longing. Erika T. Wurth lives up to her reputation as a gritty new punkish outsider voice in American horror.

AmyG @MaleficentBookDragon Unreal is way less sugar, yet you still feel like you are eating candy. Less sweet but very good. My favorites are the peanut butter cups and coconut ones. 2d
Chrissyreadit @MaleficentBookDragon exactly what @AmyG said- but the chocolate is not as sweet- think mildly sweetened dark chocolate- it‘s a taste i prefer and love ❤️ 2d

Gissy Me too! I post the books I want to read but I never know. I‘m trying to take advantage of some free audiobooks in Amazon which means some books are not always related with the season but they have been in my shelf for a long time so I want to see if I will keep the book or donate it. 1mo
KT1432 @Gissy YES I‘m exactly the same way lol! I sometimes have library holds that come in too so my entire TBR changes. 😅 1mo

I enjoyed this a lot. The haunted-by-the-past / history-repeating elements with both historical injustices against the Native population or within Olivia‘s family drama gave heightened emotion to this creepy ghost story.

I love this author. Indigenous horror is a pretty niche sub-genre but this one is an auto-buy IMO. Anything she writes. Put it in my hands right freaking now. 😂

I love this cover!! Beyond that, there was way too much going on in this story! We‘ve got a central story of a sister who strangely committed suicide in a hotel room and a sister trying to stop the same thing happening to her mother. Then you‘ve got components of the following: a massacre of Native Americans in the past, a sort of cult ritual group in the past but at a different time, a psycho ex boyfriend, a few potential current romantic ⬇️

candc320 Cont‘d: interests, racism, sexism, classism…and probably more things that I‘m forgetting. It honestly was a little too much to keep up with as an audiobook and kind of pulled my mind in too many directions for me to fully care about the central story of why the sister did what she did and how our main protagonist would keep the same fate from befalling her mom. Not badly written, just too convoluted to fully enjoy. 🌟🌟🌟 5mo

“Just like that, the warm atmosphere shifts and I can feel the first sliver of fear inch into my belly like a knife, the rich vermillion carpet and wood tables turning black, the color draining downward as if it's being exsanguinated.”

I enjoyed Wurth‘s WHITE HORSE, & the premise of this audiobook hooked me in from the start as Olivia‘s job as a paranormal investigator starts taking in more and more haunted/cursed items tying to not only the past, but to Olivia‘s own sister who passed almost five years earlier. Though there are sudden transitions & some thematic points really redundantly hammered in, this kept my attention, but as with most spooky stories, it leaves questions.
