The Storyteller by the Sea
The Storyteller by the Sea | Phyllida Shrimpton
2 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
Melody spends her days scouring the Devon shore for treasures washed up by the sea or left behind in the sand by people who come to her beach. She takes them back to Spindrift, her weathered old house set in a crescent of equally weathered old houses on the edge of a little Devonshire bay. She places her treasures on her brother Milo's bed at the end of each day and weaves beautiful and fanciful stories for him about how they came to be.Everything Melody could ever need is right where she is, cupped by the rocks that shape her bay, whispering through the salty air and chiming from the sea.Except all is not as it seems. The house of stories is under threat from developers, looking to modernise the strip of coast on which the old house stands. With the help of her estranged cousin, can Melody save the old house and change her world for the better?

These two 5⭐️ books from August were hard to choose between because they were very different and loved for different reasons.

The Shrimpton comes out slightly ahead for its beautiful writing, excellent character development and heart tugging moments. HOWEVER, the Enoch pick is hilarious, sweet and simply fun and delightful. 🩵🩵

Pickpick

This author excels at character relationships. This is my second book to read by her, and I was just as invested and impressed with it as I was the first. Melody spends her days collecting washed-up items from her beachfront cottage and weaving stories around their past lives. When her leased land is taken over by a modern developer, she is both heart-broken and terrified of moving forward with her life. I won‘t go into details here as this ⬇️

robinb story needs to be approached fresh and savored with each page. As Melody‘s past (told in a dual timeline) unfolds with its secrets and heartbreaking events, we watch a woman who is valiantly holding on to her memories begin to take tentative steps toward a new future with the help of family and friends. Simply beautiful writing and yes, definitely a few tears, this book is one ⬇️ 8mo
robinb to take one‘s time with and is one that will linger with me for quite a while. Highly recommended. 5/5⭐️ 8mo
