"A haunting and mesmerizing story about sisterhood, family, love and loss by literary luminary Edwidge Danticat. Giselle Boyer and her identical twin, Isabelle, are as close as sisters can be, even as their family seems to be unraveling. Then the Boyers have a tragic encounter that will shatter everyone's world forever. Giselle wakes up in the hospital, injured and unable to speak or move. Trapped in the prison of her own body, Giselle must revisit her past in order to understand how the people closest to her -- her friends, her parents, and above all, Isabelle, her twin -- have shaped and defined her. Will she allow her love for her family and friends to lead her to recovery? Or will she remain lost in a spiral of longing and regret? Untwine is a spellbinding tale, lyrical and filled with love, mystery, humor, and heartbreak. Award-winning author Edwidge Danticat brings her extraordinary talent to this graceful and unflinching examination of the bonds of friendship, romance, family, the horrors of loss, and the strength we must discover in ourselves when all seems hopeless."

Book Started: 11/13/19
Book completed: 11/17/19
The Boyer's family experienced a horrible car crash, which left all of them injured and one even dead. This heavily affected Gizelle who lost her twin sister Isabelle. Although the police suspected the accident wasn't exactly an accident, as the person who crashed them was perfectly fine and was even released of custody. In the end person who was arrested was Janice Hill.

When Giselle made this statement, my mind immediately went to the #coverart. There's another idea that could also refer to it. If I can find it, I'll post. But I think this one is the more likely of the two. It's not always that the interpretation of the cover is made plain. Being a twin, it's natural that she would choose this painting. If I get into my reasoning, I'll have to put up the "spoiler" screen. I love both of these images. #bookcover

I listened on audio. Giselle Boyer is a twin. And family is the central theme as her perspective ranges from a family outing, to a comatose state following an auto accident, to family gatherings again. Her upbringing has prepared her well for such a time as this. Bahni Turpin's calm and deliberate delivery as Giselle entwines the reader in "Untwine." Toward the end, each chapter ending could have been a beautiful ending to the story.

shawnmooney Great review! I've yet to read Danticat and now I'm definitely going to try this one on audio! 7y
Donna_sBookMinute Thanks, @shawnmooney. Danticat is an excellent and thorough writer. I love how she takes time and makes the effort to draw the reader into the plot. I feel like I'm in the setting with her characters. 7y

Titania I regret my most voracious weeding! I've given away or sold too many books that I now realize were precious to me. Don't weed too much! 8y
BookishFeminist @Titania lol I don't plan to. Mostly just stuff I know I won't read again bc I didn't like it. I need room for new stuff! 8y
WordWaller I always cull and regret one or two months to come, so I'm always worried that will happen again! However, moving is hard with so many books. 8y
BookishFeminist @fern Thank you!! 💕 8y
BookishFeminist @WordWaller Yes, agreed! I hate moving with books. I tend to go through in bits and pieces rather than weed all at once bc that's when I'm at most risk of weeding too many. 8y
Dolly I'd volunteer to help you weed. ::::evil grin:::: OR maybe we should organize a swap 8y
BookishFeminist @Dolly it would definitely be fun to do a Litsy book swap sometime! 8y

One of my favorite authors trying out YA fiction. Beautiful and lyrical meditation on what it's like to lose someone.

The writing is great (of course) but as a book for teens I'm worried 95% of that audience would find it slow and lacking in suspense. As a teacher and someone who knows Danticat for her literary fiction, it doesn't matter to me. I'm Interested to see the reaction of students who I may pick it up.
