The Best Friend: A Novel | Jessica Fellowes
5 posts | 5 read | 2 to read
Following the intense, toxic friendship of two kindred spirits across their lifetimes, The Best Friend is a dark, suspenseful novel and first standalone from Jessica Fellowes, New York Times bestselling author of the Mitford Murders series and the companion Downton Abbey books. Bella and Kate. Kate and Bella. From childhood they were bosom friends, Bella sensible and cautious, Kate gregarious and just a little dangerous. Yet in spite of their intimacy, their trust is fragile. Men came into their lives and things changed: a black seed was set in the heart of their relationship. Over decades, acts of both cruelty and love ferment until one shocking event tests them more than ever. Neither will escape unscathed. Reminiscent of Elena Ferrante and Sally Rooney, and for readers of Leila Slimanis The Perfect Nanny and Ashley Audrains The Push, The Best Friend explores the darkest corners of female friendship, a place where loyalty and betrayal intersect with deadly consequences.

Book 6

I listened to The Best Friend by Jessica Fellowes. Bella and Kate are best friends growing up. After having a falling, they reconnect in midlife. It's a terrible depiction of friendship with unlikable characters. 2.5 stars

The style left a lot to be desired. I did not like that there were entire chapters made up of just dialogue between two characters, often Kate and Bella. I sometimes found myself confused as to who was speaking, plus this type of presentation provided less insight into how the words said made the characters feel. I also disliked Kate so much that her character made me not only annoyed with her, but with Bella as well for putting up with her.

Unpopular opinion, but I didn‘t find this book quite as horrific as the reviews say. It is definitely missing a lot of plot, but the point is there through and through. It‘s a super quick read, and its a lot of reading between the lines, but I liked it. The ending is amazing!

This is an odd but intense and entertaining, novel! Bella and Kate are best friends until Kate kisses the boy Bella is crushing on. Fast forward to adulthood; both are married with a child…but things go haywire and yikes!! Fellowes addresses the power of female friendships deftly but be ready for surprises!
