An entirely original novel in which a bookJoseph Roth's masterpiece Rebellionnarrates its own astonishing life story, from 1930s Germany to the present day, at the heart of a gripping mystery. A powerful, powerful piece of work. Colum McCann, best-selling author of Apeirogon One old copy of the novel Rebellion sits in Lena Knechts tote bag, about to accompany her on a journey from New York to Berlin in search of a clue to the hand-drawn map on its last page. It is the brilliantly captivating voice of this novela first edition nearly burned by Nazis in May 1933that is our narrator. Fast-paced and tightly plotted, The Pages brings together a multitude of dazzling characters, real and invented, in a sweeping story of survival, chance, and the joys and struggles of love. At its center are Roth, an Austrian Jewish author on the run, and his wife, Friederike, who falls victim to mental illness as Europe descends into war. With vivid evocations of Germany under Nazism and today, The Pages dramatically illuminates the connections between past and present as it looks at censorship, oppression, and violence. Here is a propulsive, inspiring tale of literature over a hundred years: a novel for book lovers everywhere that will bring a fresh audience to this acclaimed writer.

I had hoped to finish The Pages today. I will admit that I find the multiple time frames and characters hard to follow. Much of the same complaints folks had about Cloud Cuckoo Land, which I loved. Audio May be a factor. Interesting this is the third book I‘ve read this year where the book itself is a major character/narrator/author. It‘s not the best of the three to use that approach. Loving both Dona Barbara on kindle, Clare in Print.

The Pages by Hugo Hamilton is narrated by the most unlikely of candidates—Rebellion by Joseph Roth, which escaped a Nazi book burning during World War II and is now in the hands of Lena in the present day US. From its place on the bookshelf to the inside of a shoulder bag, the book tells the story, but it has secrets of its own, including a hand drawn map among its pages. #NetGalley #ThePages

mhillis This is a soft pick for me. I really liked parts of the book and appreciate what the author was doing, but the second half wasn‘t as interesting as I‘d hoped. 2y
