How Beautiful
How Beautiful | Antonella Capetti
5 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
In this stunningly illustrated picture book, a curious caterpillar searches for the true meaning of the word "beautiful." But is there one true meaning--or many? A caterpillar lives a simple life on his leaf until one day when an Unknown Thing picks him up, calls him beautiful, and promptly exits, leaving the caterpillar wondering: What is beautiful? The caterpillar decides to embark on a quest, asking each animal in the forest, What is beautiful? Much to his surprise, each animal has a different response: A bear declares that honeycomb is beautiful, the squirrels find dry leaves to be beautiful, and a mole says his burrow is beautiful. All the while, the blackbird disagrees with each answer, pointing out that an empty can is beautiful. What's a caterpillar to do? When the day is done, the animals finally agree that one thing in the forest is truly beautiful. But what is it?

What does it mean to be beautiful? A caterpillar ponders this tangled question in Antonella Capetti‘s lovely, gentle picture book with a retro look, translated from Italian by Lisa Topi and illustrated in muted reds, antique gold and cool blues by award-winning artist Melissa Castrillon. A delight for caregivers and children alike. #kidlit #picturebook #philosophy

This children‘s picture book presents two important concepts: the importance of questioning—even though it can be unsettling to seek knowledge; and to accept that others may all have confusingly differing views, making it necessary to ponder personal meaning.

Once, there was a caterpillar. He was happy on his leaf. Actually—leaves! There were lots. Every day he‘d sleep, eat, crawl around, and sleep some more. It was a good, simple life. He never questioned anything.

5🌟 HAPPY PUB DAY! First of all this is one of the most gorgeously illustrated picture books I have ever read! The art and colors are so pleasing. My daughter wants to read this at least once a day and I'm more than happy to because not only is it such a pretty book but the message is such an important one for kids to learn. An absolutely wonderful way to show children that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Simply stunning! #bookreview
