The Governess
The Governess: The Governess ; or, The Little Female Academy | Sarah Fielding
5 posts | 3 read
Published in 1749, the story of Mrs. Teachum and the nine pupils who make up her little female academy is widely recognized as the first full-length novel for children, and the first to be aimed specifically at girls. The daily experiences of Mrs. Teachums charges are interwoven with fables and fairy tales illustrating the books underlying principles, which draw on contemporary theories of education and virtue. As central to the history of the novel as it is to the development of childrens literature, The Governess is a pioneering work by one of the eighteenth centurys most respected women writers. This Broadview edition includes a critical introduction that places The Governess in its cultural and literary context; appendices include examples of eighteenth-century educational literature and selections from Fieldings correspondence.

Mehso-so

Published in 1749, my preconceived notions of sermons were dashed when a gaggle of young girls fought tooth and nail for an apple out of a whole basket of them. Then each little brat began to share her own secret vice - envy, vanity, snubbery, etc in order to cleanse herself from all sin. I liked them better when they were fighting.

In this 1765 printing of her 1749 original, Sarah Fielding (1710-68) traces the development of nine girls under the guidance of their governess, Mrs Teachum. The first English novel intended for children, the book attempts to encourage young women to pursue lives of virtue, friendship and benevolence.

TheBookHippie I also ordered a physical copy of this 4y
