Quantum of Solace: The Complete James Bond Short Stories (Revised)
Quantum of Solace: The Complete James Bond Short Stories (Revised) | Ian Fleming
7 posts | 2 read | 1 reading | 1 to read
Quantum of Solace - the amount of comfort. Yes, I suppose you could say that all love and friendship is based in the end on that.' Bringing together all of the James Bond short stories in one limited edition stunning hardcover book, this is the ultimate celebration of suave and deadly secret agent 007. Whether he's making an unexpected discovery in the Bahamas, hunting down a Cuban hit-man in wild country, smashing an international drugs ring in Rome, on the trail of a murderous secret in the Caribbean, or foiling a surprisingly alluring assassin in Berlin's sniper's alley, dangerous missions and beautiful women come with the job for James Bond. And this agent is always a consummate professional. 'Quantum of Solace' was originally published in Ian Fleming's collection of short stories, For Your Eyes Only, and is also the title of the twenty-second James Bond film, starring Daniel Craig.

Day 24: memorial read. He may not have been the best Bond but he was the one who objected to the way society glorified a man with a gun. RIP Roger Moore. #myfirstbond #genxbond #shortstorymonth

Mehso-so

I had to rate the collection as "so-so" because of, well, it being a collection. Some of Fleming's shorts simply don't hit the mark, or they seem to fizzle without coming to much of a point.
If judged solely on the titular story, "A Quantum of Solace," the rating would be different. This is my favorite Bond tale, even if it is among the most atypical. No action, just one man telling Bond a story. Absolutely love it.

So there was a plot reveal in the latest Bond movie, Spectre, that I didn't love. But I just read the story Octopussy in this collection and it's actually somewhat based in established 007 canon so I retract at least part of my complaint. (Actual info hidden in comments.)

Anton Thought the whole 'James Bond was raised by another family we'd never heard about' idea was sketchy, but according to Octopussy he did in fact know Hannes Oberhauser and thought of him as father. But the stuff with Blofeld being Oberhauser's jealous kid is still dumb. 8y
