Sia Martinez and the Moonlit Beginning of Everything (Reprint)
Sia Martinez and the Moonlit Beginning of Everything (Reprint) | Raquel Vasquez Gilliland

"In a world where we are so often dividing ourselves into us and them, this book feels like a kind of magic, celebrating all beliefs, ethnicities, and unknowns." --The New York Times Book Review Aristotle & Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe meets Roswell by way of Laurie Halse Anderson in this astonishing, genre-bending novel about a Mexican American teen who discovers profound connections between immigration, folklore, and alien life. It's been three years since ICE raids and phone calls from Mexico and an ill-fated walk across the Sonoran. Three years since Sia Martinez's mom disappeared. Sia wants to move on, but it's hard in her tiny Arizona town where people refer to her mom's deportation as "an unfortunate incident." Sia knows that her mom must be dead, but every new moon Sia drives into the desert and lights San Anthony and la Guadalupe candles to guide her mom home. Then one night, under a million stars, Sia's life and the world as we know it cracks wide open. Because a blue-lit spacecraft crashes in front of Sia's car...and it's carrying her mom, who's very much alive. As Sia races to save her mom from armed-quite-possibly-alien soldiers, she uncovers secrets as profound as they are dangerous in this stunning and inventive exploration of first love, family, immigration, and our vast, limitless universe.

I haven‘t been more confused about my feelings for a book and for the actual book itself in a long time. I can‘t tell if it was meant to be a conspiracy book or just a magical realism book, but I feel as if that could have been easily cleared up if it had an authors note or at the very least was dystopian. And while I would have no interest in reading a sequel, a cliff hanger ending like that with no sequel is brutal. And one last thing, a 418 ⬇️

Zoe-h page book should not have 224 chapters. A chapter is more than half a page. I have strong opinions about that. I don‘t even know what to rate this. Props for such an solid iridescent cover, though. Between 1 and 2 ⭐️ 2y
wanderinglynn Ugh, I hate short chapters. Sorry this was disappointing. 2y

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.
Join the fun if you want. This is day 231.

A YA novel with Roswell vibes about a girl grieving the loss of her mother to ICE and accidentally falling for the last boy she should--oh, and also ALIENS. I really enjoyed the voice of this novel. Sia feels so authentic.

4/5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

TW: mentions of sexual assault, mentions of abuse, racism / racist slurs, ICE and anti-immigration sentiment

chlolovesbooks Been wanting to read this! 4y
