A two-hundred-year-old curse. A tangled thread of mental illness. A growing list of Ross family women dying young. The house where it all began, Desolate Ridge, holds all the secrets. Nothing Hidden Ever Stays is HR Mason's debut gothic suspense.

I liked the idea of this haunted house story a lot but between the clichés, underdeveloped characters and breaking the rule show don‘t tell, I just can‘t pick this one.

Mason does a fantastic job with developing an eerily evocative storyline full of mystery and intrigue. The eerily gothic setting incites a sense of loneliness, foreboding and a hauntingly sinister tone, while the pacing allows for a slow burn as tension builds up revealing the devious legacy this old house holds.

This may appeal to readers who enjoy murder mystery with paranormal elements, haunted houses, curses and dark family secrets.

Thanks, #NetGalley, for the fast and fun read! A haunted inheritance and the third book that I‘ve read this month to include the nursery rhyme about “One for sorrow/Two for joy/Three for a girl/Four for a boy...” The story is a straightforward one and while the characters aren‘t complex, this is entertaining and the plot definitely holds some surprises as it unfold across generations. #TeamStoker 3pts #Scarathlon
