The Ministry of Special Cases
The Ministry of Special Cases | Nathan Englander
3 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
Kaddish Poznan chips the names off gravestones for a living, removing traces of disreputable ancestors for their more respectable kin. His wife Lillian works in insurance, earning money when people live longer than they fear. As Argentina's Dirty War unfolds around them, their sometimes hilarious misadventures are soon replaced by something much darker. A visit to the dreaded Ministry of Special Cases is only the start of Englander's stunning vision of a nation in the hold of corruption and torture, a place where absurdity, despair and hope are the end products of a bureaucracy run out of control.

I so enjoyed Dinner at the Center of the Earth and knew I wanted to read more of Englander‘s work. Today I wandered to the basement of the library and found this. Discarded. Ouch. Another freebie for my TBR.

merelybookish It was meant for you! 6y

Faibka That “discarded” stamp made me feel sad, but it‘s great that now it has a new home :) 6y
Suet624 @Faibka that‘s how I felt too - sad for the author and the book. I‘m so happy I was the one to find it in the pile. 😀 6y

Pickpick

Very, very good. The storyline (a bit kafkaesk), the writing, the meaning. Highly recommended.
