Jaq Cummings is a high school teacher who really wants a committed relationship-as long as it doesn't keep her out late on school nights or interrupt Sunday mass with her dad. She is absolutely not about to fall for the hot-mess divorcee she hooks up with even if said hot mess pushes all her buttons. Jaq's white knight days are over. But one hookup with Hannah becomes two, then coffee, then more incredibly hot sex. And unlike most of Jaq's exes, Hannah's not looking for someone to come on strong. In fact, Hannah comes on plenty strong enough for both of them. But she's just out of a disastrous marriage, she's in the process of moving across the state, and Jaq can't take a chance on yet another relationship where she defaults to being a caregiver instead of a partner. Just when Jaq decides her relationship with Hannah is far too precarious, a crisis with a student reminds her of her priorities and makes it clear that sometimes, you have to take big risks to get what you really want. My favourite thing about the Queers of La Vista books is how they focus on the protagonists' everyday lives. Here, Jaq's hot new romance with Hannah doesn't eclipse her relationships with her longtime BFF, her dad, her colleagues, and her students. Ripper shows us the full depth of Jaq's life. More like this, please! #queerbooks

Hell yeah tacos!

I made some mighty tasty dessert tacos last summer. They were filled with avocado ice cream topped with frozen chocolate ganache, walnuts, and shredded coconut. Yum.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Yum. I'd pay for those! 7y

I'm ready to do some serious outdoor reading tonight. I've also got comics on my phone and the hygge book on my Kobo, but neither of those photographs well in this kind of light.

Ugh, yes. I try not to, but I also feel kinda awkward around people who mostly read nonfiction. A couple years back, a friend got a bit judgey about how I don't read too much of it, and apparently that conversation scarred me even though I read at least as much nonfiction as her--it just accounts for a smaller percentage of my yearly reading because I also read more novels.

I read a couple more chapters of THE BUTCH AND THE BEAUTIFUL over breakfast and now I'm grumpy because I can't spend all day with it. The Queers of La Vista series is great (and you can totally read it out of order, like I'm doing, but I do recommend you tackle the third and fourth books back to back). #queerbooks

This book is part of a series but can be read as a standalone. It was hard to loke one of the main characters because of what was being said about her and Jaq's own point of view. #lesbianromance

#augustofbooks I don't read a lot of romance so when I embarked on a romance reading adventure this past spring I tried to find as many non-heteronormative titles as possible. I stumbled across this series called Queers of La Vista. Other titles include "Gays of our Lives" and "As La Vista Turns."

bookishkai Riptide Publishing, who publishes the Queers of La Vista series, does a great job with non-heteronormative romances. They're greatly expanding their lesbian and bi women's selection, and their m/m books feature ace, bi, pan, and trans men. I've also read a fair bit from Interlude Press, Torquere Press, and Dreamspinner Press. Lots of good stuff out there if you know where to look. 8y
