The Nonexistent Knight
The Nonexistent Knight | Italo Calvino
4 posts | 31 read | 9 to read
An empty suit of armor is the hero in this witty novella, a picaresque gem—now available in an independent volume for the first time—that brilliantly parodies medieval knighthood. Set in the time of Charlemagne and narrated by a nun with her own secrets to keep, The Nonexistent Knight tells the story of Agilulf, a gleaming white suit of armor with nothing inside it. A challenge to his honor sends Agilulf on a search through France, England, and North Africa to confirm the chastity of a virgin he saved from rape years earlier. In the end, after many surprising turns of plot, a closing confession draws this sparkling novella to a perfect finish.

The Nonexistent Knight is Calvino's parody of chivalric ideals. Agilulf, a suit of armor without a body inhabiting it, embodies the knightly virtues amidst the physicality of the battlefield & arduous journeys. Arthurian legend is satirized by Calvino as Knights of the Grail are portrayed as a band of mystical tyrannical overlords. An important mythical figure is Bradamante, from Orlando Furioso. OF is one of the most unusual, yet striking👇

vivastory epic poems that I have ever read & Calvino's incorporation of Bradamante as a character into The Nonexistent Knight is one of the best aspects of the novella. 2y

At first, I found the symbolism a bit too in-your-face in this satirical look at being vs. non-being, honor vs. shame, and the sacred vs. the profane. But as the tale progressed, I came to enjoy the preposterousness of it and also found the narrator‘s literary commentary amusing. It‘s a fun frolic in the world of knighthood. #readingaroundtheworld #italy
