The Van
The Van | Roddy Doyle
5 posts | 18 read | 4 to read
Roddy Doyles acclaimed Booker Prize-nominated novel, a darker portrayal of midlife crisis and an expansively farcical chain of misadventures (The New York Times Book Review) Jimmy Rabitte, Sr., is unemployed, spending his days alone and miserable. When his best friend, Bimbo, also gets laid off, they keep busy by being miserable together. Things seem to look up when they buy a decrepit fish-and-chips van and go into business, selling cheap grub to the drunk and the hungryand keeping one step ahead of the environmental health officers. Set during the heady days of Irelands brief, euphoric triumphs in the 1990 World Cup, The Van is a tender and hilarious tale of male friendship and family life.

gradcat I‘m not really sure that I know what vegemite is...is it like marmite? 5y
CarolynM @gradcat Yes, it's the Australian version (tastes much better😂) 5y
gradcat @CarolynM Thanks for the answer...I never found marmite very palatable...I wonder if I would like vegemite (seriously doubt it—no offense!)...🤔😬😂 5y
CarolynM @gradcat Non taken. I think you have to have been brought up on it to like it😉 5y

The Van | Roddy Doyle
Pickpick

I loved this book. It brought me right back to my Irish upbringing. Raw, funny, sad and brilliantly written. Doyle knows his reader and what they like and delivers by the bucket load. A joy.

Never read this book or anything by Roddy Doyle but it's one of the titles I can make out on my book scarf. The description makes it sound like an interesting read.

MMenefee @Abailliekaras @timjulian @ThursdayN I have to add Doyle to the TBR list. Is his The Commitments book related to the film of the same name? I love that film! 8y
Minervasbutler @MMenefee Yes, that's right 8y
ThursdayN @MMenefee Yes. They actually made films of the other two in the Barrytown Trilogy as well. My favourite book though is "The Woman Who Walked into Doors which is a bit darker. A Star Called Henry is really good as well. ? 8y
MMenefee @ThursdayN I will check that out. Literally. My library has it. Thanks! 8y
SusanInTiburon @MMenefee @Abailliekaras @timjulian @ThursdayN I kind of backed into Roddy Doyle. The first of his I read was Paula Spencer, the sequel to Walked Into Doors. I was blown away by the voices, and the truthfulness. Have read several more, with same results. 8y
quirkyreader Cool scarf. 8y
