Make Magic! Do Good!
Make Magic! Do Good! | Dallas Clayton
3 posts | 2 read
From an exciting new face in children’s literature, Dallas Clayton, comes a book of illustrated poems full of wisdom, wonder, and whimsy. A boy with a beard tries to stay six forever. A frightful monster lives a million miles away, but is equally scared of you. A magic rope hangs from the sky, next to a sign saying "Give me a try." In this brightly illustrated selection of playful, often provocative poems, ideas run the gamut from stopping your lightning-fast running to help others keep up, imagining a store that sells colors never before made, or admitting you’ll never know all the answers (and sleeping better at night). Following the runaway success of his self-published debut, Dallas Clayton’s quirky, captivating collection makes it clear that this rising talent, whose work has evoked comparisons to Dr. Seuss, Maurice Sendak, and Shel Silverstein, exudes a spirit and style all his own.

A wonderful collection of poems reminiscent of Shel Silverstein's work. I loved reading it to my 6 year old. The illustrations are fun and colorful. The poems introduce concepts of acceptance, dreaming, making friends, making mistakes and so much more.

Today, I realized I hadn‘t seen an Instagram post from children‘s book author/illustrator Dallas Clayton in awhile. Turns out, it‘s been a *long* while; his last update was from October 2017. When I dug into it a little, I turned up an article that detailed the rape accusation against him.

UGH. This one hurts.

His entire message was about kindness, openness, and love... and he seemed like such a force of good. What a colossal disappointment.

monalyisha I should be reading for #freakyfriday right now but I‘m honestly so bummed out & distracted by this! 6y
vkois88 That's such a disappointing thing to read. But the way she wrote her poem and told her story was done beautifully. I hate to use that word in any way surrounding this sort of thing, but it's the only one that comes to mind. 6y

vkois88 Thank you, because are the words I was looking for... my brain was just too muddled to come up with them on its own. 6y
