Brian Duffy, aging soldier of fortune, had been hired in Venice by a strange old man who called himself Aurelianus Ambrosius. I love Tim Powers and this was the first book of his that I read and it still stands the test of time. King Arthur, The Fisher King, the last of the Vikings, the siege of Vienna and beer - what more could you want. A quick read and in many ways more fun than some of his later books.
