This RF novel, Merci Suarez Changes Gears by Meg Medina is a great being of age story. I recommend RA to a class at the beginning of the school year so children can make self to text connections right off the batt. This story is about a young girl Hispanic girl on a scholarship in a private school starting in 6th grade. She faces challenges in making friends, figuring out how to fit in, and faces family struggles. #ucflae3414f19

YesseniaN I believe creating a story map would be a great activity to complete with the students as you read aloud the book. Since it is a chapter book, it won't get completed in one classroom setting. This way the students can create a summary with pictures as they go along. https://www.teachingbooks.net/clp.cgi?master_id=59025&lf_id=9

YesseniaN For an ESOL strategy, I suggest working in pairs or groups when creating the story map. This way the student isn't falling behind on comprehension and key points of the text. Also allowing the student to complete the story map at home if needing extra time. Perhaps allowing the student to have their own copy of the book to follow along. 5y
Jgolub13 I‘m happy I chose this book for my LC. It is a fantastic book that should be more well known. 5y
maciforster This book did seem interesting when we talked about it in class! I think it‘s a great idea for pairs when creating the story map depending on how you would pair them up! 5y
DrSpalding This is a wonderful coming of age story. Realistic fiction helps students relate to the content. This one is multicultural and diverse. It not only incorporates a family struggles but also the issues students may have in school and how they can be handled. 4y
