“Itadakimasu” is what Japanese people say to express gratitude before they eat. In volume 4 of this cooking/slice of life #manga, a gay couple in Tokyo continue to grow in their appreciation for each other. In this issue, their respective bosses use them as sounding boards. Shiro hasn‘t yet conquered his fear of coming out, but he does overcome his fear of making tempura. #LGBTQ #comics #translation

While the translation is sometimes awkward, I am continuing to enjoy Shiro Kakei‘s culinary adventures in this series. He wants to become adept at making tempura, but he‘s intimidated by the task. (I am too!) His mother‘s advice is that he needs “derring-do” to be successful at it. Bravery is not one of Shiro‘s strengths.

“I gotta use up the ketchup.” What? Weird! I don‘t use ketchup myself, but I was under the impression that it keeps for a long time if it‘s in the fridge. Also puzzling is that in Shiro‘s recipe, he just adds a little squirt of ketchup, not a lot, so it‘s odd that it‘s the dish he thinks of when he needs to use up the ketchup.

Severnmeadows For dipping on the side of the plate, with fish and chips😊 is when I get it out of the fridge- it seems to last until the bottle is empty no problem! (edited) 5y
twohectobooks Maybe it‘s some kind of artisanal ketchup. The Heinz stuff lasts for many months in the fridge! I only really have it with sausages or fries which isn‘t super often. 5y
Lindy @twohectobooks Maybe, but unlikely. Shiro is very price-conscious and in this volume he‘s embarrassed at one point that one of their foodie friends is coming for supper, a guy who only buys organic seasonings. Shiro thinks to himself that he could never afford that and what will this guy think of his supermarket condiments. 5y

Lindy @Severnmeadows Yeah, I just searched online. Apparently an opened ketchup bottle is good for a year past the expiry date if it‘s kept in the fridge. 5y
Reggie So I work with this woman at work who I told I made pasta alio e olio and she told me that when she was young her grandmother made that for her and her sister and they would put ketchup on it. I thought that sounded so gross but she assured me it was delicious. I‘ll never try it though, lol. 5y
Lindy @Reggie There are strong feelings about whether or not ketchup is a good addition to a meal. 😆 5y

Shiro is sick and so Kenji is in the kitchen for a change. I was delighted to realize that he‘s making shiraae, which I tasted for the first time (several times!) on my recent trip to Japan. I made it when I got home and my fussy 10-year-old niece told me she loved it. And proved it by eating a lot of it. 😊
