The Honest Spy
The Honest Spy | Andreas Kollender
5 posts | 4 read | 7 to read
During one of history's darkest chapters, one man is determined to make a difference. In the tradition of Schindler's List comes a thrilling novel based on the heroic true story of Fritz Kolbe, a widowed civil servant in Adolf Hitler's foreign ministry. Recognizing that millions of lives are at stake, Kolbe uses his position to pass information to the Americans--risking himself and the people he holds most dear--and embarks on a dangerous double life as the Allies' most important spy. Summoned from his South African post to return to Nazi Germany, Kolbe leaves behind his beloved fourteen-year-old daughter, a decision made for her safety that nonetheless torments him. And as he lives under the constant threat of arrest, he wrestles with the guilt of putting Marlene Wiese, a married nurse and the love of his life, in danger as they collaborate on Kolbe's clandestine work. But no matter the personal cost, Kolbe will not be deterred. In scenes that pulse with suspense, he emerges as a towering figure who risked everything to save innocent lives--and Germany from itself.

I'm really reading this for the interesting story rather than the writing. I'm really not sure why he didn't write a biography instead, although the way he did it is certainly interesting. As many Littens and Goodreads readers have commented, the translation is really clunky. I believe it takes a special translator to translate well out of German (and Afrikaans, like me haha).

Bailedbailed

I‘m 50% through this one and I️ have to bail. Billed as a tense spy novel set during WWII, it has no tension whatsoever. It is dull, dry, and very poorly translated. Sometimes there are parts that make no sense. I️ wish I‘d bailed earlier. This was an Amazon free Kindle pick. They are not normally this bad, but every now and then one is a dud like this one.

Betty I appreciate reading negative reviews too --- tells me what books to avoid. Thanks! 6y

Finally picked my free Prime book for October.

BarbaraTheBibliophage I often wait until later in the month. I like waiting for more reviews to be posted. 6y
mariaku21 I was tempted by this one! 6y
Texreader @mariaku21 It‘s a clunky read. I couldn‘t figure it out, then I saw it was a translation. Not a very good one. Hopefully the underlying story makes up for it. 6y
