Breakthrough!
Breakthrough!: How Three People Saved "Blue Babies" and Changed Medicine Forever | Jim Murphy
3 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
In 1944 a groundbreaking operation repaired the congenital heart defect known as blue baby syndrome. The operation's success brought the surgeon Alfred Blalock international fame and paved the way for open-heart surgery. But the technique had been painstakingly developed by Vivien Thomas, Blalock's African American lab assistant, who stood behind Blalock in the operating room to give him step-by-step instructions. The stories of this medical and social breakthrough and the lives of Thomas, Blalock, and their colleague Dr. Helen Taussig are intertwined in this compelling nonfiction narrative.

Did you know that a baby's heart doesn't look even *remotely* like an actual human heart until at least 35 days after it's born? At first, it's just got two squiggly tubes, which then fuse to form an "x" shape, and then it *eventually* forms chambers.

That's insane to me. ???

stargazerblue49 Development is a way cool phenomenon. It's amazing that things go right as often as they do when the process itself seems so complicated. 7y
monalyisha @stargazerblue49 I agree. Way cool - and also terrifying! 7y

Pickpick

I loved this MG nonfiction title about race, gender, & medicine. And, to be honest, I don't often use the words "love" and "nonfiction" in the same breath.

It's about how a trio (including a female doctor and an African American research assistant) inspired the true beginnings of cardiac surgery, and saved the lives of thousands of "beyond hope" babies. I often found myself stopping to share learned info with those around me. Seriously amazing.
