Berry Pickers | Amanda Peters

The plot is entirely predictable but the writing was lush and nostalgic enough to make it a good slow summer read. This starts with a chapter from a man named Joe thinking back to one summer in Maine when his family was picking berries to make money and his sister Ruthie disappeared.

despite having read quite a bit about residential schools, there were still a couple of surprising things (not good surprising). Of course, when he finished school, he had issues (the alcoholism), but it was good to see how he got himself better and is doing good to help others, as well. I thought this was really good.

Finished this morning. Excellent if you want to learn more about trauma and resilience and how to support people who experienced it, or understand yourself better. The most important takeaway - it is never too late to heal.#psychology#trauma#healing#childhooddevelopment

I don't want ever to be wholly relaxed, wholly at home, in a world of flowing fresh water built on the parched pain of others. The world itches, and so it should.

The famous red-and-white-striped lighthouse had been demolished, only last year. It had stood on the edge of the Ness since 1792. But by 2013, the sea had doggedly eaten its way too far inland, and the lighthouse was decommissioned. Waves lapped at the base of the building. It was time to level it....

Why hadn't the lighthouse simply been left to rot with the other ruins on the Ness...?

This is a clever novel that follows the story of Loveday Cardew, a young woman working at a bookshop who prefers books to people. The novel explores themes of love, grief, and the power of literature. It explores her relationships with an array of characters, including her boss, Archie, and a poet, Nathan. The narrative is interspersed with Loveday's tattoos, which feature the first lines of her favorite books, adding a unique layer to the story.

Big Swiss: A Novel | Jen Beagin

Vaginas that feel like castles; killing bees; adultery; a dark compact between mother and daughter; stalking; sexual obsession. If that does not intrigue you, then skip this. All of the above happens in a quaint New York hamlet that people move to to become the better version of themselves. But what happens if there isn‘t a better version of you? Darkly madcap. So startling, it disgusts; so hyper real, it excites. Will be better as a film.
