The movie is very well done and the book is a good introduction to WWII, based on the author's gripping real-life story.

Karisimo So many good ones including this one!! Thanks for sharing!! 5d
KathyWheeler I didn‘t know there was a movie. I‘ll have to check it out. 5d
TheBookHippie @KathyWheeler It is so very well done. We got it from the library. 5d

I chose two books set mostly in the Pacific theater of WWII. It‘s been a long time since I read Code Talker, but I remember it being a fantastic book about the Navajo code talkers that served in the U.S. military. Grenade is told from the alternating perspectives of a Japanese teenager and a young U.S. Marine during the Battle of Okinawa.

Karisimo I‘ve heard of both of these but not read them yet! We watched Hacksaw Ridge tonight which took place in Japan. Thanks for sharing!! 5d

War That Saved My Life | Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

Set in WWII England, this middle grade novel details Ada‘s escape from her abusive mother to join her brother Jamie as he is evacuated to the Kent countryside. She grapples with (forced) gratitude toward her new caretaker Susan, low self-esteem, and the knowledge that her mother does not love her, for she could have given Ada surgery to fix her clubfoot as a child and did not.

@Karisimo

SaunteringVaguelyDownwards This Newbery Honor book would be great for an upper elementary or middle school class to learn about WWII as well as what anxiety is like, as Ada often “goes away inside her head,” gets overwhelmed with crowds, and likes the comfort of being swaddled in a blanket when she panics. There's also a great sequel - The War I Finally Won! 6d
Daisey I agree; this was such a great book! I‘ve yet to read the sequel, but I just recently read another historical fiction by this author - 6d
Karisimo This one is a new classic! @daisey I have the night war in my queue right now! Thanks for sharing @SaunteringVaguelyDownwards 5d

I chose a World War II novel set in Pearl Harbor. My grandfather served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was stationed in Hawaii for part of that time.
I have not read this book yet, it was a cover buy. It sounded like an interesting story.

Karisimo It does sound good! I had a great uncle at Pearl Harbor! Thanks for sharing!! 5d

@karisimo

Setting: the Manzanar Internment Camp during WW2. “FAREWELL TO MANZANAR is the true story of one spirited Japanese-American family's attempt to survive the indignities of forced detention—and of a native-born American child who discovered what it was like to grow up behind barbed wire in the United States“ (Goodreads).

A powerful book to read and to teach.

Karisimo This one is new to me! Thanks for sharing!!! 5d

Pickpick

During WWI two young French girls befriend a blind, British and AWOL soldier in the woods. They agree to help him get back to his very ill brother in England. He shares stories about the silver trinket he keeps in his pocket. A very sweet and sad story. #MiddleGradeMonday

It's Memorial Day in the US, so let's share books that take place during these two wars for #middlegrademonday !

The tagged book follows five kids from different countries who represent various elements of WW1. Their lives intersect in creative ways, each displaying courage in their own way. Engaging characters drive the story, but kids will also learn a lot about WW1 along the way- exactly what I expect from historical fiction!

I‘ve read many middle grade books written in verse, and if I were in my classroom today, I might have shared a stack. However, from home, the first one that came to mind that I hadn‘t already seen shared was this one about a girl dealing with a few truly difficult experiences.

My review includes a few examples of the poetic form used in the story. https://litsy.com/p/eG1FQmRpYzdn
