This is a pretty lively summary of readings about discoverers and “discoverers”, explorers and mapmakers. Inherently a volatile mix of political chicanery, the hubris of men that think it‘ll be fun to sail off the edge of the world, scurvy, occasional deaths by polar bear, and the vicissitudes of pre-industrial economics, expansionism, and mercantilism, I found myself grimly laughing at all these misadventures.

pickBaldacci is always a good bet and I really enjoyed listening to this. Melvin Mars is on death row, last mile, for killing his parents… when another man confesses. However, Amos Decker thinks something is off about the confession and, yet, that Mars is still innocent. They both look into the past to find the truth. Trigger-racists.
pickEarth is on the brink of collapse, so when a message from a long-extinct alien race called the 'Undying' is intercepted, it seems like the perfect solution. The message leads to a now uninhabited planet called Gaia where it's rumoured that the temples hold tech worth a fortune. Mia Radcliffe is hoping to make enough money scavenging to buy her sister back from an illegal contract but she will have to compete against faster & stronger competitors.
pickEnjoyable and fun. Ending got wrapped up a bit quick for my liking, but that‘s ok.
So the great bare-handed mullet grab wasn‘t a trick. It wasn‘t possible after all.
Guess I‘ll have to come back another day and try again, Roy thought. That‘s what a real Florida boy would do.
