A wonderful mostly wordless MGGN about a girl who leaves Cuba without her parents under the Peter/Pedro Pan operation. Her life in Cuba is in color; her life in NYC is in grayscale. I love how the color shows up in books, foods, and flowers, bringing her back to life. This book brought me almost to tears, just thinking what it must be like to send a child away for years, not knowing if/when you‘d see her again, for her safety.

“I'm sorry, Evie. She's gone.“
Although that's not necessarily the most intriguing first line (or is it?), I am thoroughly enjoying this juvenile series, Blight Harbor, by Lora Senf. Can't wait for the final installment to be released in September! #FristLineFridays @ShyBookOwl

#ReadAway2024

Finished this for my #QUABC 40-Book Challenge prompt: “A National Book Award winner.” It was the 2023 Winner for Young People & it was delightful. I think everyone can relate to the trauma/drama of middle school & Sanat captures it in all its glory in his illustrations & text. Set mainly on a life-changing school trip to Europe, I enjoyed reading it while listening to the Spotify “mix tape” playlist he includes the QR code for.💙

suvata I‘m doing that challenge as well. But, I have only completed 15 books so far. The National Book Award winner category is going to be difficult for me. 22h
DebinHawaii @suvata This was a good quick & easy way to knock it out if you haven‘t read it. 22h
suvata @DebinHawaii I‘ll keep that in mind. Thanks. 22h

Beautiful artwork. The story wasn‘t super impactful but it was cozy. About friendships, apprenticing, and maintaining tradition. Perhaps loved the explanation of tea dragons and care at the end even more than the story!

This graphic novel had me in tears! Such a beautiful and poignant story about a girl struggling with her big brother‘s addiction issues. Told in dual timelines, this story also weaves in the history of the DC and Marvel comics and how those characters inspired young people for the first time.

This is an amazing book narrated by a horse named Joey during WWI. Joey does different jobs and ends up traveling a lot during the course of the war. It touches on some hard topics and has some truly sad scenes, but it also has a happy ending.

Mehso-so

This story of a Jewish/Muscogee girl had promise but didn‘t live up to it. Mia struggles with her father‘s side of her ancestry, as her very religious mother and stepfather immerse her in Jewish culture. I felt like Mia‘s mom was so removed from Mia‘s life that it seemed unbelievable. Both parents seem kind of deadbeat, despite the mom‘s constant presence (can one be simultaneously helicopter and deadbeat?). Disappointing overall.
