Recipient's book tastes

I'm a mom who reads and writes pretty much just YA. I love fantasy and sci-fi; throw in a romance and a mystery, and I'm great. This year, I am looking for something with big emotional impact. I wanna feel all the feels, right? I got great books last year and I just read "The Girl of Fire and Thorns." It was rich in world-building, but the romance was absent, so my heart didn't get the connection the way it does with something like, "Hush, Hush" (but that one was very teenagery in a way that made the heroine too ditsy). Sarah J Maas is one of my favorites, but I've read "Throne of Glass" and "ACOTAR" (most of both series). They were definitely right up my alley. Thrillery is fine, just not horror. And if it's already on my to-read list, even better.

Do not get

Anything Horror.

Other advice/preferences

I am also a professional editor, so I haven't had time to read any commercial, current books, so if you love it and it's new, don't assume I've read it, because I haven't. When I read mediocre writing, I find that I write mediocre writing, so I'd like to try to stay with traditionally published or books with great writing, to keep me in that headspace. I'm in a style flux as I grow and I want to always do better than the last book.

LibraryThing user mice_elf: checked (Dec 5, 2023, 10:52am)
LibraryThing user saroz: I think she would really like Tanith Lee's classic sci-fi/fantasy/romance, "The Silver Metal Lover." (I'm serious!)

Another good pick would be Joan D. Vinge's "The Snow Queen," but it's less of an out-and-out romance. Great worldbuilding, though.

LibraryThing user merrystar: Something by T. Kingfisher - "Paladin's Grace" perhaps.
