Alone: The Journeys of Three Young Refugees
Alone: The Journeys of Three Young Refugees | Paul Tom
1 post | 1 read
Finalist, Governor General's Literary Award, Translation Each year, more than 400 minors arrive alone in Canada requesting refugee status. They arrive without their parents, accompanied by no adult at all. Alone relates the journey of three of them: Afshin, Alain and Patricia. Their story opens a window onto the many heartbreaks, difficult sacrifices and countless hardships that punctuate their obstacle-filled path. But Alone most especially tells of the courage and resilience that these young people demonstrated before being able to finally obtain a life where threats and danger are no longer a part of their everyday existence. Pickpick

I sincerely hope this is in school libraries, elementary and high school, as well as public libraries.
It's a very accessible version of minor refugees telling their stories, and, appropriate to the reality that they are not a monolith, it selects three people to tell the story of their particular origins, what necessitated their immigration, how they came to Canada, their experience upon arrival. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? The images and words are spare, it allows for focused attention on the experiences and emotions. I found the choice of a limited colour palette underlined the urgency of the message.
I love that there is a glossary in the back, that specific organizations that are involved/assist refugees are named, and that the end of the book shows the actual peoples' pictures and updates you on where/how they are.

Robotswithpersonality 3/? Also glad that each of the three is shown not just at a different age at the start of their journey, but in different points of their life now. 2mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/4 It certainly casts a rosy glow on the refugee experience in Canada, which I'm sure I not the reality for all, but I want to believe that a book like this both recognizes and respects everything people have lost, have had to leave behind, as well as how critical it is that Canada remains a nation that welcomes refugees, that supports immigration
⚠️mention of war violence, political imprisonment, homophobia, death of parent
