3 posts | 1 read
Pádraig O’Callaghan (1888 – 1969), born and bred in the Dingle Gaeltacht, was a fluent Irish speaker and passionate advocate for the Irish language. He was a travelling teacher, a Volunteer during Ireland’s fight for independence and a Civil War internee, who later became principal of Knockanure National School. He married Elizabeth Cronin of Knockanure and they raised four children: Austin, Máighréad, Brendan and Tony. In his memoirs, written as a 77 year old, he recalls an eventful life lived in service of country, community and family.

This is a fascinating insight into Pádraig O'Callaghan's extraordinary life. He paints a vivid picture of his childhood - which sounds incredibly tough to a 21st century reader, but which he reflects on with stoicism - and his role in the fight for Irish independence, and his tireless work to promote the Irish language. I wonder what he would have made of Kneecap? If you're interested in Irish history, this is a brilliant first-hand account.
