Everything can change in a heartbeat ... The pulse-pounding new thriller from the bestselling author of You Dont Know Me Laineys friend Ellis is missing. And shes not the only one. In the six months since the first case of a terrifying new epidemicwhen a healthy baby wouldnt take a breath at birththe country has been thrown into turmoil. The government has passed sweeping new laws to monitor all citizens. And several young pregnant women have vanished without trace. As a midwife, Laineys mum, Emma, is determined to be there for those who need her. But when seventeen-year-old Lainey finds herself in trouble, this dangerous new world becomes very real. The one person who might help is Emmas estranged mother, but reaching out to her will put them all in jeopardy ... The Hush is a new breed of near-future thriller, an unflinching look at a society close to tipping point and a story for our times, highlighting the power of female friendship through a dynamic group of women determined to triumph against the odds.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½
I listened to the audiobook and believe it enhanced the story!

England, the near future. An increasing number of babies are not surviving beyond birth, and now young women are disappearing (along w basic human rights). Conspiracy theories are flying & are far closer to the truth than imagineable. 17-yr-old Lanie soon finds herself a target, and her midwife mother must confront the horrors ahead w help from a brilliant group of women.

steph_phanie Wanted to add: My only complaint is that we were not given a glimpse of the resolution of the larger societal issues. The reader must be content in only knowing how our main characters fare. 10mo

Not sure how I came to be reading this book 🤔. The writer is from the UK & lives in Western Australia. She is doing her PHD at the same uni my kids attend, 10 minutes down the road. She‘s written other bestsellers. Has anyone read them?

I really enjoyed this speculative fiction, full of female characters and with a YA, handmaid‘s tale vibe. I did have to suspend judgement at times, but it wasn‘t too hard. I happily went along for the ride 😁.
