I give up. Not because the book is bad, mind you. I can see the book is good. The fan translations are horrible. Truly terrible. I read a couple paragraphs in French, until I get to a bit that makes no sense, so I switch to English. Until that doesn't make sense. Lather, rince, repeat. I can see it's good, but it's just too much work to go through. Sad. Should I just learn Mandarin?

Still enjoying this. The tv series is pretty different than the novel, from what I can tell so far. I'm at episode 34 of the series and still very early in the novel, yet, so that may change. Of course, there is no romance between Sui Zhou and Tang Fan in the series, only between Fan's sister and Dr. Pei. The intrigue is changed a bit as well. It's fun though. ETA: the novel translation is so bad though... 😵

Reading and watching. Series is very fun so far (most of what annoys me about Chinese dramas toned down: comedy is not too clownish, main actors are good, voice actors are ok).

The young Tang Fan, a sprightly sixth rank magistrate, and Sui Zhou, a taciturn Imperial guard, work to crush a conspiracy within and without the Forbidden City. In the novel, they fall in love.
