The Yamas & Niyamas
The Yamas & Niyamas: Exploring Yoga's Ethical Practice | Deborah Adele
5 posts | 7 read | 2 to read
The first two limbs of the eight-fold path of yoga sutras--the basic text for classical yoga--are examined in this spiritual guide to the practice of yoga. Foundational to all yogic thought, they are considered to be the guidelines to the yoga way of livingthat free individuals to take ownership of their lives, direct them toward the fulfillment they seek, and gain the skills to choose attitude, thought, and action. The first five guidelines are referred to as the yamas--a Sanskrit word that translates to "restraints"--and encompass nonviolence, truthfulness, not stealing, nonexcess, and nonpossessiveness. The last five are referred to as the niyamas, or observances--purity, contentment, self-discipline, self-study, and surrender.A self-study section at the end of each chapter may also be used by instructors for group discussion.

Yoga is so much more than mastering the physical practice. It is also a mental/spiritual practice of letting go and learning more about yourself. This book explores the spiritual practice of the 8 limbs of yoga. It dives into yoga‘s ethical practice and each limb is a guideline of living/incorporating yoga into everything you do off your mat. It‘s the basic philosophy and study of applying yogic principles to becoming the best version of yourself.

“What if we could trust life like we trust the breath? What if we could take in all the nourishment of the moment and then let it go fully, trusting that more nourishment will come?“

This book was so so phenomenal. This book is not about how to have an ethical yoga practice, but about the guiding principles we should work into our lives. Whether we are on the mat, sitting at our cubicles, or talking with family,

sarahlandis the Jewels (or Gems of Wisdom, or Yamas and Niyamas) are a set of Yoga principles, that help guide light into our lives in any situation or at any time. This book expands on my thoughts of yoga not just being an exercise or one hour session each day, but a way to approach every part of life. Because yoga is in everything- it's how we choose to approach conflict or discomfort, or how we feel release or gain peace. 4y
sarahlandis I loved this book because it gave me very clear words to describes the things (goals, philosophy, practices) I've already been working on.

Recommended to anyone looking to expand their knowledge of self. This is NOT geared towards yogi's.

Accidentally posted this under another book once but couldn't stand to not fix it....

This book is a great help in understanding the yamas and niyamas as I've been trying to grow my practice and understanding of yoga.

I celebrated International Book Day with trip to Whitty Books in Tulsa's Kendall Whittier District. Afterwards met up with my Yogi Posse to see
Iyengar: The Man, Yoga, and the Students Journey at Circle Cinema. Only seemed fitting to buy a Yogi Book. 🧘‍♀️
