2 posts | 3 read
The Runaways is an inter-generational adventure filled with warmth and humor from one of the world's great writers for children. Grandpa hates being in hospital. He thinks only of the place he was happiest--the island where he used to live. He wants to go back, but they won't let him out of the hospital. So Gottfried Junior, his namesake, helps Grandpa make a plan to run away. They think of everything. Their deception is so complete that when Gottfried Junior finally decides to tell the truth, no one believes him.

Pickpick

What a cute story!!! Quite funny too! A grumpy grandpa at the hospital runs away with the help of his grandson to visit one last time his house.

It's also a moving story about the end of life. About intergenerational relationship. I liked the illustrations by Kitty Crowther, especially when they were of the landscape.

I need to look if it's been translated into French. It would be a great gift for my nieces ;)

Loved the relationship between boy and grandfather. A simple story, yet deals with complex issues such as family relationships, death and sorrow. The author deals with these complex issues with an even hand - the reader is not preached at. A delightful book for the young and young at heart.
