The remarkable true story of the bear who inspired Winnie-the-Pooh During World War I, Captain Harry Colebourn, a Canadian veterinarian on his way to serve with cavalry units in Europe, rescued a bear cub in White River, Ontario. He named the bear Winnie, after his hometown of Winnipeg, and he took the bear to war. Harry Colebourn's real-life great-granddaughter Lindsay Mattick recounts their incredible journey, from a northern Canadian town to a convoy across the ocean to an army base in England . . . and finally to the London Zoo, where Winnie made a new friend: a boy named Christopher Robin. Gentle yet haunting illustrations by acclaimed illustrator Sophie Blackall bring the wartime era to life, and are complemented by photographs and ephemera from the Colebourn family archives.

This was left in our LFL and I wanted to read it because our pibble‘s name is Winnie. Turns out it‘s the true backstory of Winnie the Pooh, for whom said pibble is named. The author is the great granddaughter of the veterinarian who bought a bear cub from a trapper at a train station (as one does) while on his way to serve in WWI. A touching story, and there are photos of the real Winnie in the back. ❤️❤️❤️

This book brings back so many childhood memories for me. Making the connections between this book and the world's most famous childhood bear Winnie-the-Pooh. Also seeing how this bear has been in this family for generations at a time is very touching and heartwarming.

This book is a great book to read. One thing I loved about this book was that it was the story of winnie the pooh but more so a prequel into that saga. It‘s awesome to have an understanding of the whole thing and I think children would love this too!

Finding Winning tells the true story of a real-life bear and the experiences he went through. A mother tells her child the story of Winnie as a bed-time story. The illustrations are well done and paints a beautiful picture of the settings, emotions, and storyline. There are real pictures of Winnie at the end of the book which is a pleasant surprise and really creates a connection between the readers and the events portrayed in the story.

Just want to say thanks to everyone for expressing condolences about Winnie's passing! It was too much to tag everyone, but I read them and thank you! I'm at peace knowing she's not suffering, and I talked about what happened with her vet and I can rest easy knowing I did all I could for her. If you've been following me for a while you know me I love having pets so I am already on the hunt for the next one!

Librariana My condolences on the passing of the fur baby member of your family 💕 May Winnie's journey over the Rainbow Bridge find her resting easy on the other side. 4y

This NF Caldecott award winning book is a great RA for an Elementary classroom. It tells the story of a veterinarian who is off to war to help with the horses and on the way there he buys a young bear from a trader and names it Winnipeg. The after a while he decides to take the bear to the zoo where a young child named Christopher Robin names his stuffed bear based off of miss Winnipeg. This a great story to build text to text connections.

KatiaP The ESOL strategy I would use is 4, linking the lesson to student's prior knowledge as well as UDL 3.1 building on background knowledge by helping students be aware of Winnie the Pooh stories by reading them one or showing them the show or movie. To listen to an interview with the author: https://88cupsoftea.com/lindsaymattick/. #UCFLAE3414SP20 4y

Caldecott winner picture book, Finding Winnie NF&B is a true story of a sweet bear who was rescued by a man named Harry Colebourn in 1914, going on a journey from Canada to England. She ends up in a zoo in London & become friends with boy named Christopher Robin. This work well with RT & IR, I believe both would allow students to really understand this book. 9.3, “Develop self-assessment and reflection.#UCFLAE3414SP20

Kayla_C ESOL strategy 3, “Encourage self-talk (positive thinking),” because this story teach such an important lesson that all students should learn. This is a great resource for educators, which provides with ways you can you this book to teach all subjects.

I absolutely love this biography following the bear, Winnie, who was the inspiration behind Winnie The Pooh. Winnie was found at a train station, spend some time in the military, and eventually moved to live in a zoo where she met Christopher Robin. This story is so heartwarming I had to buy my own copy. Illustrator Sophie Blackall designed such an adorable, lovable bear, and it won her the 2016 Caldecott Medal. #UCFLAE3414F19

JennaMichelleCohn UDL 9.1, “Promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation,” and 9.3, “Develop self-assessment and reflection,” would both be great here along with ESOL strategy 3, “Encourage self-talk (positive thinking),” because this story holds such an important message about doing what‘s right and following your gut instincts. It‘s something everyone needs to read because of this alone. This story would be good for IR. 4y
