Boundary Crossed
Boundary Crossed | Melissa F. Olson
After her twin sister's brutal death, former US Army Sergeant Allison “Lex” Luther vowed to protect her niece, Charlie, from every possible danger. Then when two vampires attempted to kidnap the child, it quickly turned into a fight to the death—Lex's death, that is. Lex wakes up to two shocking discoveries: she has somehow survived the fight; and baby Charlie is a “null,” gifted with the ability to weaken supernatural forces…and a target for evil creatures who want to control that power. Determined to guarantee a safe future for Charlie, Lex makes a deal with the local coven. She sets out with the dashing—and undead—Detective Quinn to track down who's responsible for the kidnapping, sharpening her magic skills along the way. But the closer she gets to the truth, the more dangerous her powers become, threatening to destroy everything—including herself. Boundary Crossed is a dark, thrilling glimpse into a magical world that will leave readers spellbound.

A fun, fast-reading, well-paced urban fantasy that starts with Lex discovering a crime that hits very close to home, and in turn leads her to learning about her unusual powers. There's an interesting political setup which adds depth to the world-building. Side characters are engaging too, and I cared what happened next. Recommended!

Just realized: pronouns are important! What happens at the end explains the weird pronouns conversation at the beginning! Well done, laying it out for me so well that I didn't even realize what had been set up until I had a sleep.

Well, already finished it. Delightful piece of UF candy. Characters I love, feel for, and totally understand. Lex being exactly what she ends up being has a bit of a 'chosen one' feel, but not enough to ruin the mood.

Mostly, I just want to find out what happens next!

Let me just read the first chapter or two...

*8 chapters later* ...oops. Well, this bodes well for the quality of this book?

A few of the military references are just wrong enough to make me twitchy, but at least not wrong enough to completely bounce me out.

Looks like an interesting UF character: a null, who weakens the powers of other paranormals, and who is in high demand as a result. Werewolves don't have to change on the full moon; vampires can go to the beach and get a tan.

JosephBower It's a good series! Definitely worth the read or listen. 8y

An easy, well flowing read with a smart heroine who doesn't take crap from anyone. She does what she has to and doesn't apologize for it. It's great to see such a down to earth character.
