The bestselling book in the US in 1950 is a story about an American priest's rise through church hierarchy from newly-minted cleric to Cardinal. Drama is thin: Father Fermoyle's ascent is mostly unimpeded; his mistakes are small; and even church politics have more to do with misunderstandings than malice.

It's long, episodic, and very religious. But mostly it's long. For me it's a dud. But then I am probably not in the target audience, so YMMV.
