The Triggering Town: Lectures and Essays on Poetry and Writing
The Triggering Town: Lectures and Essays on Poetry and Writing | Richard Hugo
6 posts | 8 read | 6 to read
"Richard Hugo's free-swinging, go-for-it remarks on poetry and the teaching of poetry are exactly what are needed in classrooms and in the world."—James Dickey Richard Hugo was that rare phenomenon of American letters—a distinguished poet who was also an inspiring teacher. The Triggering Town is Hugo's now-classic collection of lectures, essays, and reflections, all "directed toward helping with that silly, absurd, maddening, futile, enormously rewarding activity: writing poems." Anyone, from the beginning poet to the mature writer to the lover of literature, will benefit greatly from Hugo's sayd, playful, profound insights and advice concerning the mysteries of literary creation.

9/10 I had to read this for my writing class. It was super informative though, and he was super honest and relatable. It didn‘t feel like academic reading most of the time which was very nice.

I loved this book; Hugo's essays and talks helped me to think of poetry in new ways. Thank you to author Erica Wright the recommendation.

This book turns all my ideas about poetry on their heads, and since Richard Hugo was a much better writer than I am, I'm looking forward to learning from him. #writing #poetry

Mehso-so

Essays on poetry writing by Richard Hugo. Some parts were inspiring while others were a bit... tedious. That said, if you ever find yourself suffering from writers block, this would be a good book to pick up to kick yourself into gear again.

"You owe reality nothing and the truth about your feelings everything." - Richard Hugo on writing poetry. Preach! ???
