We Should All Be Feminists | Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Pickpick

This small book gives more in less. The author deals with major women's issues in a clear and non-combative manner. She holds up a clear mirror to her society. Then, she suggests a simple way to make the reflection less distorted. I loved that. The cis and hetero-normative language bothered me at first. But, then I accepted that she is not talking about intersectional feminism. Apart from that it is a good book. Very recommended.

I wasn't sure of what to expect when going in, but this has been one of the best reads of the year for me. I am thinking of reading other books by her.
These stories were so strange and yet so familiar. I didn't like the last two that much, but the others were very touching. All the characters were people we may have known at some point in our lives.

Going to try reading this in German as a language exercise. I was thinking Grimm's Fairy tales, but decided against them. Harry potter seems the perfect choice as I have read these books so many times, my poor German won't be a hindrance.

I loved this book inspite of its sentimentality. Though it became preachy and moralistic at times, I couldn't help but love Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. Jo was my favorite, of course.
It is funny, simple and has a genuineness which is endearing. It was written for young girls, but I don't think I would have liked it at that age. I would recommend little doses of it for people who, like me, are not too fond of sweets.

The Handmaid's Tale | Margaret Atwood
Pickpick

Flowers, windows, curtains, red, blue, black, a missing light. Trivial things, loneliness, and power. Small slivers of it. Absence of it. Discovery of it in hitherto unknown places. Longing and desire. Of skin and words. Longing to see and be seen. I had never imagined that being able to look people in the eye could be an act of freedom or treachery for someone. I would have liked to know what happened to Offred, though. 👇

Meghagrawal But then that could have taken away the dream like quality of the book. 1y
PickingBooks This is one of my favorite books. I also felt let down by the ending initially, but I really liked the epilogue though. It gave me the closure I needed. It‘s a book that sticks with you and grows on you, I promise. 1y

Congratulations on reaching your 2000th post @Sarah83 . I am rather new on litsy, but it has become my favorite social media. These days I am not being able to read much apart from my course books, yet I don't feel too homesick for it. All because I can look at gorgeous book covers, read interesting thoughts about them and add new books to my tbr. This place is just what an introverted reader like me needs.

Sadly true. Though day by day we are seeing less and less of them, But it is not necessarily good news. Not all of them can afford to buy e-rickshaws and go for other kinds of low-pay hard labour or worse, end up unemployed.

Thank you @MinDea & @Robothugs for this #favoritebookgiveaway
I have tagged 'My Father's Suitcase' by Orhan Pamuk, his Nobel Prize acceptance speech. Every word in this book resonated with me on a deep level. I was blown away by Pamuk's raw, honest voice. After reading this I got two of his books to read, but never started. I guess I don't want this spell to be broken. I don't know if that makes sense. Has anyone else ever felt like this?

Most of the story line, save for the Pretty Woman role reversal was standard stuff. There were looots of steamy scenes, which sort of are important to the story in the first half of the book. It was nice to read about an autistic woman character, but I would have liked this book better, if the other characters had been paid a little more attention too.

Utilized my after-exam saturday and did some reading today. Just a 100 more pages to go on this one. Until now, it is between a pick and a so-so for me. There were bright spots, when Stella and Michael's actions made sense. And then there were times when it felt like I must have missed a page or two to understand why something is happening. I hope that the latter part of the book makes me a little more sure.
