The Makioka Sisters | Jun?ichir? Tanizaki, Edward Seidensticker

I am even more stoked to be beginning this novel tonight now that I've seen on its Wikipedia page that, when it first began to be serialized in Japan in 1943, it attracted the suspicions of the wartime censors, who opined: "The novel goes on and on detailing the very thing we are most supposed to be on our guard against during this period of wartime emergency: the soft, effeminate, and grossly individualistic lives of women.”

saresmoore I had so many knee-jerk reactions to this, I think I kicked my poor cat. But I've calmed down and read the Wikipedia page myself. Clearly, I'll be reading this, too. 7y
shawnmooney @saresmoore 😻😻😻Clearly, I'd be delighted if you did! It's about a 500-page novel, and with all else I've got on my plate, it'll probably take me at least two months to read. But it sure is starting out good! 7y
batsy This has been on the TBR for far too long. Gahhhhh #toomanybooksonlyonelife 7y

batsy @shawnmooney Oooh how tempting! But I have the massive Angela Carter bio to get through this month 😧 7y
shawnmooney @batsy I hear ya. Sometimes I think it'd be easier if you'd plan our reading one month and I'd do so the next! 😂😂 7y
