I‘m only 150 pages in but I have to say I‘m a big fan of Francoise and the aunt. What characters! I‘m totally sympathetic to Francoise being a grouch when she, after all, has to walk ten miles at night to see her grandson when he‘s sick and be back before her tasks start in the morning. #teamFrancoise Her little ditty about the pregnant kitchen maid made me laugh out loud which I wasn‘t expecting! (mean of her but still!)

Centique @batsy they say that Moncrieff was adept at the descriptive and intellectual material but a little off on some of the dialogue and colloquialisms. And it sounds like there are some areas where it is uncertain what order of text Proust intended - I‘m assuming that‘s in one or more of the later books - possibly still filled with notes and amendments when he passed. So some revisions put the same text into different spots. 4y
Lcsmcat @Centique @batsy I‘m reading the Moncrief / Kilmartin translation and in the forward it talks about Moncrief translating idioms literally as well as the problems with the editions he was translating from that you mentioned. I‘d love to compare it to the new translation sometime. 4y
batsy @Centique @Lcsmcat Thank you for the explanation! That is so fascinating and throws light onto just how much of a collaboration translation can be, especially over a period of time... I think I'm going to fall into the rabbit hole of Proust translation articles later today :) I don't have any of the books yet but have long been contemplating getting the Lydia Davis translations. 4y
Centique @Lcsmcat I think this one is very much in sync with the Kilmartin. Enright is very complimentary of him and only says that Kilmartin intended to make a few changes when he became ill and could not. And then there is a little new source material that was found after the 81 edition it seems - I‘m not sure whether any of it affected this volume though. 4y
Lcsmcat @Booksnchill @batsy Something in the section I read this morning sent me to my Kindle French edition, and I really wish I had the bandwidth to read it all in French. And I feel good about this translation but now think a reread in the original will be in order, sooner rather than later. 4y
Booksnchill @Lcsmcat I have been listening to the Moncrief edition while reading the Davis translation (not at the same time) but I find some marked differences in the inferences made through the choice of language and it does make me wish I had enough french to read the original. Maybe some day. I am so glad I embarked on this journey finally. 4y
