Leonardo da Vinci | Walter Isaacson

Bailedbailed

This book is nothing more than a Renaissance gossip column, if it can even be called that. Supposedly this book is about Leo‘s notebooks, but they get no more attention than anything else. What this book is really about is Isaacson‘s obsession with Leo‘s sexuality, diet, and looks.

GingerAntics If you only know Leonardo da Vinci from this book, you would imagine that somewhere, hidden in his notebooks is Leo‘s manifesto on vegetarianism, a declaration of being gay (known as a sodomite and a crime punishable with death in Leo‘s time), and probably a few vain passages on how good looking he was. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 5y
GingerAntics The fact of the matter is that none of that exists. Isaacson has taken the three things we can have no proof of and can only speculate on, and made an entire book about them, mixing in a detailed account of a few pieces of art and a few pages of his notebooks to make the book extra long. If I didn‘t know any better, Isaacson has the hots for Leonardo da Vinci. This book is painful and long winded. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 5y
GingerAntics There are other books on Leonardo that at least give a more balanced view of his life. This book makes it seem like one of the greatest geniuses in history, the man that practically invented the idea of the Renaissance Man, sat around thinking about not eating meat, how good he looked, and having sex with men most of the time. No idea when Isaacson‘s Leonardo had time to do anything ingenious (you know, those things we KNOW for sure he did). #dnf 5y

GingerAntics It would be really awesome if Leonardo da Vinci were an LGBTQ+ hero. Don‘t get me wrong. We just can‘t know if he was. Let‘s just make him a hero for using your brain and accepting everyone as is, the way he seemed to live his life. We need more of that. Then, more amazing people would feel free to come out and the LGBTQ+ community will be rolling in everyday heroes. Just a thought. (edited) 5y
Graywacke Maybe Da Vinci and Time Magazine don‘t mix well. (I did like his book on Steve Jobs) 5y
GingerAntics @Graywacke does Isaacson write for Time Magazine? I did not know that. Generally, the writing in that is better than in this. Hm. I think the problem with this one is that he‘s got a man crush on Leo and that takes over. 5y
GingerAntics @Graywacke I have heard very good things about the Steve Jobs bio. 5y
Graywacke @GingerAntics he was the managing editor of Time. He was also CEO of CNN at some point. 5y
GingerAntics @Graywacke really? I didn‘t know that. That, along with all the good things I‘ve heard about the Steve Jobs boos, is really making me think it‘s just something about Leo. Maybe he‘s not the best subject for Time Magazine and CNN, like you said. 5y

Pickpick

REALLY short, more like a half hour, but it gave a great over view of Leonard da Vinci‘s life. It‘s a good starting point. This would be great for kids. Each chapter is really short with very simple, straight forward language. Add in a book with his art and/or images of his notebooks and you‘re good to go. It‘s much better than Isaacson droning on about his sexuality and appearance.

GingerAntics I‘m glad I picked this up and I‘m ready to jump into Da Vinci‘s Ghost. 5y

I think that last sentence is probably the most important part. We‘re lucky we have what we do of this indicative man. Why waste time lamenting what we don‘t have, and enjoy and learn from what we do have.

These are supposedly Leonardo da Vinci‘s last words. They definitely give you something to think about.

Here‘s hoping this is far less insufferable than Isaacson‘s book. The intro is already more entertaining.

This is one of my favorite drawings ever. I‘ve been obsessed with it since I was a kid. I like this deeper analysis of it. (I wonder if there is a book completely about this drawing...hm)

GingerAntics @wanderinglynn I actually just added that to my wish list in Apple Books. I wasn‘t aware that was mostly about Vatruvian Man, so that‘s another plus for that book. Thanks for the recommendation. 5y

I would really like to see his sources on this. It‘s nothing more than speculation. He MAY have been gay, he equally as likely was what we would call bisexual today. Hell, he could have been secretly having sex with every woman he came into contact with for all we know. I‘ve yet to see anything conclusive on this, but Isaacson seems stuck on it. In fact, I‘m beginning to think he‘s got a man crush on Leo.
