Who, really, is the woman behind the man Macbeth who would be king?

A lovely retelling of one of my favorite Shakespearean that really gets into who Queen Macbeth was. Unfortunately for it, it also didn‘t do what I wanted. I had gone in expecting a tale of an ambitious, manipulative queen, & instead got a story of really good, beloved King Macbeth who united Scotland, accepted all. I might like this better on a reread.🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

This was a bit of a slow starter for me.

I honestly think this addition to the Hamish Macbeth books was one of the greatest ones I have read yet! I love the friendship made between Hamish & James! And I'm glad Hamish ended with another love interest!

This one was extra jarring & felt like a totally different series. Just when I finally had gotten used to the 2nd narrator, this one has a different one. Everything felt off in this one. Sigh. 3⭐️

@Cuilin ... I remember reading your review of this a few months ago, and I immediately stacked it. MACBETH is my favorite Shakespearean play, and I was like, “A book about Lady Mac?“ Yes, please! I just read HEREAFTER a couple of months ago and look forward to diving into this one. The bookmarks are frickin' adorable, too! I'm so glad we're journeying through #NPLH together and am lucky to have found you on Litsy. 🩵💙🩵

This is a short, modern retelling of Macbeth from the point of view of Lady Macbeth or Gruoch. I loved Grouch‘s relationships with her women; they are her heart and strength as much as Macbeth. Queen Macbeth is the 5th in the Darkland Tales series in which various Scottish writers reimagine events from Scotland‘s past in new ways.

I definitely recommend revisiting Shakespeare‘s Macbeth before reading this novella or at least have a good understanding of it. McDermid‘s retelling is short but does not lack substance. I love when we get a more fleshed out character (particularly the women) in a retelling of a classic. Added bonus here for the more historically accurate story as well.
